Ditherington Flax Mill

Yesterday I went to an open day at Ditherington Flax Mill to see an Art Exhibition as well as to look around this fascinating building.

At the moment it is in a derelict state but it is a Grade 1 listed building with Grade 2 listed buildings around it. Why is it so important? Well, it is the grandfather of the modern skyscraper, the first building to be built with a complete metal frame, in this case iron. The buildings have stood empty for 20 years. In 2009, English Heritage, Shropshire Council, Advantage West Midlands and the Homes and Communities Agency started to develop detailed plans for the future of the Flax Mill.

The building above shows the North Silo, built in the 1950's as a malt silo for the maltings which took over the mill.

Above, amazing the lengths people will go to make their mark, the floors here were rotten!
