147 Miles North West (London 2012) Artist Statement
“London Olympics 2012”, probably the most used words in the media this year, I am a proud Shropshire girl with childhood memories of the town where it all began, of days out in the town with my family, eating ice creams in the Summer and exploring the town.
Much Wenlock, a rural town, couldn’t be much different to London, but has had a new lease of life from the 2012 Olympics despite its distance from the games.
I want to make a journal of an Olympic journey, to capture the impact of the Olympics and it’s assocations with this somewhat overlooked town. The Olympic’s humble British beginnings.
I propose to walk the Olympian trail a number of times to document this journey through photography. I would also like to document the changes that Much Wenlock has seen for the Olympics, some temporary, some more permanent. Overall I would like to document the “buzz” and atmosphere of the Olympics here.
I have always enjoyed photographic work which documents journeys, including the work of Jem Southam, Richard Long and Hamish Fulton. I feel as a landscape photographer this is what it is all about. Taking the viewer with you on an adventure, showing them the things that you might point out to a friend or loved one you were sharing the walk with. Interesting things, quirky things, above all the things which catch my eye. Others walking the walk would notice different things but this is me taking you on my journey with me. My Olympic trail, my experience of the Olympics and what I find important, and I guess in a way that is quite removed from the speed and glamour of the Olympic Games 2012 which will be going on in London, but it is it’s routes, it’s foundations.
